Car keys with transponders are thought to keep cars more secure and are more difficult for thieves to duplicate. However, keys may need to be reprogrammed in the event that it is damaged or lost.

Most modern vehicles require some kind of transponder key or fob to operate, providing security and protection against theft. These keys are programmed by a locksmith or an authorized dealer to work with your car's systems and specific model. It's expensive to replace them if they become lost, so it's better to have spares in your possession. You will also find replacement key fobs in various online stores and in a variety of brick-and-mortar automotive shops. But how can you tell that the new key fob you bought is genuine? Can you tell whether it was programmed for a different vehicle or if it can be programmed to work with your car?
To program a new car keys, you must first ensure that your vehicle is running. Insert the key you wish to program into the ignition, but do not turn it. You will only have a couple of seconds before the car's system resets commands and exits programming mode. It is essential to move quickly and don't be patient between each step. Turn off the engine to prevent this. Turn the key from "on" to "off" to test the system. The door locks should cycle and you will hear a chime signalling that the process has been successful.
Certain newer vehicles utilize rolling keys to keep thieves from using stolen keys to start the car. This technology is still vulnerable to a technique dubbed replay attack, which allows thieves to record the signal from the key fob on the vehicle, then reproduce it to unlock the car.
