Trying to set Kendo UI date picker to today's date on open if blank
Kendo UI date picker defaults to the last date set if you don't intervene. Set the first date to 1/1/1969, then open the second. Normally, it would default to 1969, but here, we're catching open and if it's null/blank, we default to today's date.

Kendo UI drop down not updated when Knockout view model updates
Kendo UI drop down not updated when Knockout view model updates. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14639232/kendo-ui-drop-down-not-updated-when-knockout-view-model-updates for more info. I ended up using Knockout subscriptions for now instead of the Knockout-Kendo library. I set the drop down value in the UI inside the subscription function. I also had to change the code above to keep the same instance of the ViewModel in memory. Getting a new ViewModel() on each button click meant the change/subscription code didn't fire.
