Dingbat Color in iOS Safari

HTML

<p>
I want the dingbat "heavy multiplication x" below to be huge and blue in all browsers, and the CSS rules to the right work in all browsers I've tested <b>except mobile Safari</b>.
</p>
<span class="dingbat">&#x2716;</span>
<p>
How can we change the font-size and color of dingbats in iOS Safari?
</p>

CSS

body {
  font-family: sans-serif;
}
.dingbat {
  color: blue;
  font-size: 100px;
  display: block;
}
