ADHD Diagnosis - Why Some Private Clinics May Be Exploiting Vulnerable People

A recent BBC Panorama investigation has found that some private ADHD clinics may be exploiting vulnerable people. Some patients are given a diagnosis prior to having been evaluated or their mental health history is considered.

GPs are able to relay your symptoms and enquire about your family history, but they cannot make an exhaustive diagnosis of ADHD. Private psychiatric tests will help you obtain the diagnosis you need and get treatment immediately.

Waiting several times

The NHS is a good resource to diagnose ADHD. However the wait times for an assessment can be lengthy. It is not uncommon for people to wait for up to two years to receive an NHS assessment. Some people opt to pay for a private examination which is more expensive but is often faster. However the recent BBC Panorama investigation has raised concerns that private clinics are handing out inaccurate diagnoses and prescribing dangerous medications without taking into account the risks.

Panorama's investigation was conducted by an undercover journalist who visited three private ADHD assessment clinics. Each of them identified him as having ADHD and all of them prescribed him powerful medication for long-term use. The report also highlighted a lack of proper mental assessments and a lack of care by doctors to consider other conditions that could be mistakenly attributed to ADHD.

The interview can last two hours. This gives the clinician sufficient time to review the entirety of your symptoms. It is crucial that the professional understand the causes of your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. The expert will give you diagnosis and go over treatment options including medication.
