ADHD in Women Adults

Women who suffer from ADHD face a number of challenges. They may struggle to manage daily tasks, cope with relationship problems and meet societal expectations. They may also have difficulty staying focused at work and forget appointments.

A recent study looked at the experiences of women who were diagnosed with ADHD as adults. The study revealed that, while the diagnosis was a relief and helped make sense of previous difficulties, it can also be bittersweet.

Diagnosis

It can seem like the first step towards understanding and managing your symptoms when you're diagnosed with ADHD. It can help you identify your struggles and see that they are something that you can manage and not cause you feel "weird."

Women are better at hiding their symptoms, and it can be harder for them to recognize themselves as having ADHD. They may be used to disguise their inattention by working late or using tools like planners and phones to keep track of daily tasks. Or, they may be able to hide their impulsivity by acting quickly to speed up a project or make comments in conversations without thinking.

In the event of a diagnosis it is important to consult a mental health professional who has experience with adults. A friendly group of family and friends can also assist in helping you navigate the process. A health care provider or mental health professional could use standardized behavior rating scales or ADHD symptoms checklists to evaluate the symptoms of an adult and determine if they meet the criteria to be considered a case of ADHD. A physical exam and medical history are typically part of a diagnostic evaluation for adults. Psychological tests can be used to evaluate working memory, executive function (abilities such as decision-making and planning) spatial and visual skills (related to spatial space), reasoning and reasoning abilities.
