Medications For Inattentive ADHD

ADHD is treated with many different kinds of medication. Your doctor will carefully consider the benefits and risks of each drug.

Therapy or counseling could be recommended by your doctor to assist you in managing your symptoms. Psychological treatments can be effective for people who suffer from inattention ADHD.

The most commonly prescribed medication for inattention ADHD is psychostimulant. These drugs help you focus by reorganizing the signals that are sent to the brain. Your doctor will choose the right medication and dosage to fit your needs.

Methylphenidate

Methylphenidate is a centrally nervous system stimulant, also referred to as Ritalin. It helps reduce the symptoms of inattention ADHD. It is believed to work by blocking the reuptake of monoamines, such as dopamine and noradrenaline, to the synapse, thereby increasing their concentrations at the synapse. It is a well-established drug and remains the first-choice drug for most clinicians. Methylphenidate can also be taken orally in the form of standard (immediate-release) tablets, chewable tablets (Quillichew-ER) with a long-acting effect (Quillichew-ER) and slow-release capsules like Adhansia-XR -ODT (and Jornay-PM).

It is not proven that medication alone can be shown to improve inattentive ADHD However, when used as part of a holistic treatment plan that incorporates behavior therapy, medication can be extremely effective. Children with inattentive ADHD treated with methylphenidate as well as behavior therapy showed better improvement in their symptoms than children who received the same dose or no medication.
