How to Diagnose ADHD

Providers use clinical interviews and behavior ratings scales, symptom checklists filled out by the patient, as well as other people in their lives and psychiatric histories and medical information to determine ADHD. Psychotherapy can also be employed to treat symptoms.

You must show six signs that first appeared before the age of 12 and affected your daily activities in two different places (home and school or at work and social settings) to be diagnosed with ADHD. It is crucial to receive the correct diagnosis prior to deciding on a treatment plan.

History of Symptoms

When a patient decides to visit an ADHD specialist the doctor will look over their symptoms and determine if they meet the diagnostic criteria for the disorder. These are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5), published by the American Psychiatric Association. To be considered a diagnosis the symptoms must be present for at least six months. The person must be suffering from at least five ADHD symptoms that persist and they have to hinder their performance in at least two different settings like school and at work. The person's ADHD symptoms cannot be explained by any other mental health issue.

The doctor will first talk to the patient to inquire about their symptoms and the impact they have on their lives. They will also ask someone about their family history, and also their medical and psychiatric histories.
