Universe Evolution
After the initial expansion from the Big Bang, the only original elements were Hydrogen and Helium. The first generation of stars that formed after the big bang primarily fused H into He, but as they ran out of fuel, they started using more inefficient forms of fusion, resulting in elements with large nuclei, like Lithium, Beryllium, etc. which were then spread throughout the universe when the stars went nova. Later generations of stars, seeded with those heavier elements, fused them into even heavier ones, eventually bootstrapping up to Carbon, Oxygen, and others necessary for organic life as we know it. If you were feeling pedantic about it, you could even get into all the trace elements needed by humans to survive like Tellurium and Gold.
