HTML

<div>
    <form>
        <input type="checkbox" name="item[0][test]" value="1" />
    </form>
</div>

JavaScript

var context = jQuery("div:first").html();
//added quotes around the attribute value
alert(jQuery("input[name$='\[test\]']", jQuery(context)).size());

//why not just do
//alert( jQuery("form").find("input[name$='\[test\]']").length );
